Well the fun keeps coming with cancer treatment! In addition to nausea, weight loss and hair loss, you may also experience “chemo rash.” The chemo drug we’re given exists our body in various ways; eliminated via urine and stool, as well as through our pores. When excreted via our pores it can cause a rash on our face, back, chest and/or neck or really anywhere on our body. The rash will look like small, puss-filled pimples. It can often be quite itchy and annoying! Even though you will be tempted, try to not pop or scratch the “pimples.”
Treatment
I have found the best way to treat chemo rash is by washing your skin with a low Ph soap. You also want to keep your skin moisturized with a hypoallergenic moisturizer. I found Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and Cetaphil Gentle Skin lotion works really well (their Baby Lotion works awesomely too!) You will want to wash and apply lotion several times a day for best results. If you get chemo rash and it’s annoyingly itchy your doctor can prescribe a corticosteroid cream.
I also found a “Herbalist” who makes all of her own skin care products using organic ingredients. She makes a healing lotion with various herbs and oils which I used (and still use). You may be able to find one in your area or you can contact the person I use and ask if she would be willing to ship to you. Email: Annie Schmidt
