Chemotherapy can cause peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a type of nerve damage. Studies show 30-40% of cancer patients experience neuropathy during or after chemotherapy treatment, with the hands and/or feet being the most affected area.
While there is currently no treatment known that prevents CIPN, studies show using cold packs during chemotherapy infusions may help prevent or reduce peripheral neuropathy. The use of cold packs during chemotherapy reduces the blood flow to that area, which means a reduction in the amount of chemo that reaches the nerve endings in those same areas.
Amazon offers several different types of cold packs for hands and feet to choose from. I tried several different brands and found SuzziPad Cold Therapy Socks and Gloves to work the best. The material held up well and the socks and gloves come with an attached elastic strap to keep them in place while apply a gentle compression. They also come in a variety of colors, such as purple, pink, blue and black!
